Reflection 2

This week I began to learn the open chords. Open chords are those (relatively basic) that have unpressed strings. The significant open chords I learned are G major, C major, D major, F major, E major, A major, E minor, and A minor. The importance of learning these chords is that many songs can be played with only these chords; therefore, learning these chords gives me the opportunity to start playing songs! I will constantly use the open chords each time I play the guitar. It became apparent when practicing, however, that learning these chords is difficult and will take significant time. I need to memorize the chords and only once I commit the chords to memory can I begin to practice chord transitions. This may take a few weeks, because I do not want to move on to other skills before I can master the basics (i.e. open chords). I did relatively well during my first experience with open chords, but much practice will be needed before I can be truly comfortable with them. However, I'm happy with my progress so far! As long as I keep practicing, I will learn. So, more chord repetition is in store for me. Until next week!

  1. Do you know that I have played a lot of string instruments and never realized that was why they are called open chords? Thanks for teaching me something new! Are there ways to make the repetition of practicing more fun? Good luck on learning them! Can't wait to hear how it goes. Maybe next time you can post a picture or video of you learning the chords?
