Reflection 1
To start my 20% project, my first instinct was to search for as many possible theme tutorials that I could find on the internet. I found a few good ones and bookmarked them for later references. Next, I happen to stumble upon a hidden gem called Dash by General Assembly, which is a website that "teaches HTML, CSS, and Javascript through fun projects you can do in your browser." First thought: "This is my kind of learning. Let's do this." Immediately made an account and started the lessons. To the right is a picture of what it looks like using the website HTML portion of the program. Basically, skills are broken up into mini-lessons which are taught through a slideshow that explains what certain things mean, how they should look, and then it stops at a checkpoint, giving you a chance to input what you just learned into the coding area below. The panel on the right shows you how your code will appear in a browser. Once you've mastered a skill it moves on to the next section then so on so forth. It became really addicting and I found it hard for me to stop. I just kept wanting to code more and more. Eventually I finished all the skills and had to find something else that would teach me more about the intricate parts of theme coding, However, I believe this was a good first step because it did teach me the basics of coding and now I can refer back to the lessons whenever I need a refresher. Also, it made me more mindful of mistakes, which can cause a lot of problems because there is so much information and a small slip-up can easily go unnoticed and ruin the whole theme. I will keep the knowledge I learned through Dash as I continue on towards coding my first tumblr theme.
