Reflection 10

This week I feel as if I truly accomplished the things I set out to do. I didn't have much homework, so I spent a lot of time at home practicing my signing. I not only mastered the 100 basic signs, but I also practiced understanding other people when they sign things to me. I found a program where I could practice reading other people signing the alphabet and making words, and now I feel more confident in my ability to communicate with others, as it is no longer one-sided with me just practicing with my hands in front of a screen. I also experienced a great moment this week where I could show off my knowledge of sign language. In health class, we were learning how to help a choking victim, but the first thing we needed was consent, and a classmate asked, "what do we do if they are deaf and can't hear us asking them if they need help?" And I was able to show them the ASL sign for help, which is placing the palm facing upward, placing your other hand in a fist in a thumbs up position, putting that hand on top of your palm and bringing your hands upward. I felt so accomplished knowing that I was able to provide information that could help many other people in the future. My goal for next week is to go through three ASL lessons and practice understanding other people when they signing. Hopefully, by the end of this project I will be able to have an entire conversation with another signing person.
